Interesting update to GIMP, the open source Photoshop clone: the Cage Transform tool.

We still have not embraced the elegant, delicate flaws in our bodies. In my life, I have taken a number of figure drawing classes and have seen all shapes, all sizes, all aspects of the human body. A beautiful engine, our bodies; indifferent to size, shape, or color.

Photo manipulation tools obscure that subtle beauty in an opaque, gossamer veil of preconceived perfection. A synthetic human, a replicant, dressed in pixels. A ghost made by the machine.

Sometimes, I feel as though we’re walking backwards, missing the world in front of us.

A few months ago, Spotify, a European online music subscription service, began operating in the United States. I love the press release – it’s a thing of beauty:

conversational

lyrical

fairly concise

Generally, press events are good for communicating new services, products, or events for the various constituencies a business may accommodate. Recently, Spotify held a press event to announce (drumroll, please): a partnership with Coca-Cola.

Now, in fairness, the rest of the world may very well identify the United States with apple pie, baseball, and Coke. And to the international community, such a partnership with Coke might merit a press event. Well, maybe.

But not here.

Coke may be an internationally recognized brand, but there is nothing new happening in the world of Coca-Cola soda. No new flavor. No new packaging. No new news.

So to the folks at Spotify, I offer this: Welcome to America. Welcome to the new carousel.

I’m concerned about the future of Flickr. Yahoo! is in a bad place1, unable to fully capitalize on the amazing community it has created. So I’m concerned Flickr, as a result, is caught in the downward spiral.

Meanwhile, 500 Pixels is looking like a magnificent replacement. The company offers a new tiered membership for $20, which is $5 cheaper than Flickr’s Pro Account. But, even more interestingly, 500 Pixels seems to understand something about its users that eludes most companies: users dislike EULAs. More, users dislike the legalese, the byzantine language upon which EULAs are built.

500 Pixels understands. They have the best Terms of Service I have ever read2.

When a company begins using its patent portfolio in a cannon-like fashion as Yahoo! has recently with Facebook, and is incapable of innovating, sports rotating CEOs, and endures heavy layoffs, it seems safe to say they’re in a bit of a pickle.

The key to their success: I actually read it.

Funny, touching, lyrical, and sometimes plain foolish, The Show with Ze Frank was a beautiful and creative communication, a love letter to the Internet penned in raw creativity.

Recently, Ze Frank used Kickstarter to fund a new project, this time called A Show.
